The 1990s were the golden years for SNL, in my humble opinion. With the likes of Will Ferrell, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, and so many others made for a wonderful several years of sarcastic and oddball humor. Among my favorites of that time frame is, was, and always will be Ana Gasteyer.
She joined the cast in the mid 90s, and played some of the most memorable characters and lampooned some of the biggest celebrities. I’m not sure what my favorite impression she did was: Celine Dion or Martha Stewart? And who can forget her classic skit with Molly Shannon and Alec Baldwin: “Schweddy Balls?”
One of my very favorite roles she played was that of “Bobbi Culp,” the loveable (and apparently tone deaf) middle school music teacher. She would dance, shimmy, and shake in her polyester dress and create oddball musical renditions of current hits, usually piercing our ears and sounding like a drowned rat.
It turns out that Ana is very, very, very far from being Bobbi Culp in real life.
As it would turn out, Ana is a talented jazz musician and recently hit the stage and gave an incredible rendition of Carrie Underwood’s hit, “Before He Cheats”. Give it a listen!
