She’s all the sass and brass and good down-home grit that country girls are made of with all of the Canadian quintessential niceness.
Augusta Ray first caught my attention a few months back when I was on the hunt for a great Reba McEntire cover. Among the videos of girls singing “Fancy” at the top of their lungs in their car and shaky handheld clips of preteens singing “Why Haven’t I Heard From You” in their bathroom mirrors came a beacon of hope and light.
This was when I first met Augusta Ray.
Of course, she prefers that you don’t call her Augusta. She goes by “Gus”, and would appreciate you calling her thusly. Gus sang “Going Out Like That” in a Toronto bar, and I swear I was transported to a hot Tennessee night, slinging back a stiff whisky with some of my girls at our favorite watering hole. After finding this clip, I went on a mission to learn more about Gus. Originally from Canada, she wears leather like a rockstar, sings like an angel (or the devil when she needs to), grew up listening to classic rock and country, and was named the “New Country Songwriter of the Year in 2016” by the North American Country Music Association International.
She’s a young, talented, breath of fresh air in this world of over processed and insincere music production. She’s a badass, sweet singing, country darlin’ from the North and Tennessee is lucky to have her.
