Sam Hunt: The Misfit of Country Music
Sam Hunt has always been a misfit searching for other like-minded misfits to join his team.
Hunt, arguably one of the hottest music stars in the country sky right now, had a rather meager and humble start to his career. Just two years ago, Hunt could be found touring the country with two guitarists and a laptop as his backing band.
That’s not only a humble start but also a glimpse into the essence of a man who is determined to do things his way – tradition be damned.
These days, Sam Hunt has a full backing band yet still maintains his quirkiness.
How? Well, his shows have been known to pop up a few surprises for his audiences. Hunt sometimes breaks out into raps during his concerts, including everyone from Kanye to Drake. He has also been known to suddenly sing songs by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston during a show.
He also embraces flowers as his backdrop for his concerts and happily told Billboard in a recent interview that his style was “a little bit nontraditional.” Nontraditional is a pretty good way to describe Hunt, who has had three consecutive number one hits in the past year and shared a stage with Taylor Swift during one of her many sold out performances.
His outfits, his occasional raps, and his disregard for what is considered traditional country behavior have made him the target for many unkind words.
It is for these reasons that Hunt has been eager to find other people who identify themselves as misfits, those that are willing to be their authentic self and have fun while doing it.
Is there anything more country than that?
