Has Country Music Lost Its Heart?

Advertisements

There is a lot being said today about the authenticity and merit of country music. Some of the old guard, such as Emmylou Harris and Merle Haggard have spoken out against the contemporary country music being played on the radio and in the stadiums today. Haggard said that the music today is just about ‘screwing on a tailgate’, which Harris said she only listens to any contemporary country if it happens ‘on accident’. But it isn’t just the old guard, some of the newer faces have been speaking up, whether it is Maddie and Tae speaking about the portrayal of women in today’s country, or all the artists taking offense to the term ‘bro-country’. Everyone seems to have an opinion on where country music stands today. Allow me, if I may, to give my quick two cents:

Country music is about your heart and being true to yourself, therefore, EVERY style of country music is authentic. Some people want to hear the steel guitar, and some want to hear about drinking on a tailgate, and some want to sing something sweet to a loved one. There is no wrong answer. Country is about the heart and should speak to and from your soul: Can’t we all just agree on that and be happy for each other that we have found the style that works for us?
