The Hot Toddy was one of the first alcoholic cocktails I ever wrapped my lips around. Back in the day, my Mama and Daddy would let me try sips of what they were drinking. The truth was that I hated nearly everything they gave me, and of course, that was part of the point.
If I was ever sick, my Grandma insisted I take a good haul off her Hot Toddy, promising me that it would make me feel better “quick as a jiff!” It. Did. Not. It was horrible! I hated it. And for that reason, I avoided the Hot Toddy right up through most of my adult life.
Well, until RECENTLY, that is!
Out at a cold bonfire the other night with friends, I was handed a hot cup of heaven. “What is it?” I asked. “It’s a Fall Spiced Hot Toddy.”
I couldn’t believe it! It was sweet, it was comforting, it was perfectly spiced. It was fabulous. How many years was I missing out on this warm wonder that is divine to sip on next to a fire? So many years wasted. Either my Grandma didn’t know how to make a good Hot Toddy or I just didn’t know what I was talking about.
Fall Spice Hot Toddy
28 oz. apple cider
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
6 cinnamon sticks, toasted and cracked
6 cloves, cracked
4 allspice, cracked
Half a vanilla bean, lightly grilled and split in half lengthwise
Combine all ingredients together and allow to simmer but never boil. Strain with a cheese cloth so the cracked spices don’t end up in your glass!
Combine 4 ounces of the spiced cider mixture with 1.5 ounces of whiskey for a Fall Spice Hot Toddy!
