There are some songs that when you hear them, they transport you back to a moment that changed your life.
I had experienced my first real heartbreak. One of my very best friends, the first boy I ever loved, was in a terrible home situation. We told each other secrets, held hands, and collected baseball cards together. It was young, innocent, and silly. But it still makes my heart flutter to think of sitting outside on the swing set with Paul and talking about life.
He came to the swing set one day with tears in his eyes and told me that he wasn’t going to see me again for a long time. His grandmother, his caregiver after having been abandoned by his mother, had tried to harm him with a knife. He was being taken away and he couldn’t tell me where. He kissed my cheek, thanked me for being his friend, and a police car took him away to his foster home.
I was devastated.
I went home, turned on my radio. I was angry. So angry. Hurt. I was angry at his family. I was angry at the police that took him away. I was angry at God. So angry and so hurt. Then, this song came on the radio, and it was like I was being given a gift.
This January marks the 25th anniversary of the song “Unanswered Prayers” by Garth Brooks being a number one hit. I still remember the first time I heard it, and I still remember that feeling. The feeling of sadness and the release that came when I really listened to the message. The song had a huge impact on my life. Isn’t that what great music does for us?
What is a song that changed your life? Or what is a song that brings you back to a specific point in time?
