You’ve probably heard that running joke in the music scene about how audience members request Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird” at any concert, no matter what the genre.

Well, there’s a good reason that joke exists: it’s an awesome song!  Even though it was released in 1973, the past four decades have not diminished the epic nature of this iconic tune.

It’s got all of the elements we love in a rock song: it starts out slow and easy, but builds to an amazing crescendo that has kept us rocking out for the past 40 years!

The genius behind this crazy guitar solo is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s front man, Rickey Medlocke; this fan footage was captured at the Times Union Centre in Albany, NY when Skynyrd did a show with Peter Frampton.

You’d think that playing this song for years would start to get a little tiring, right?  Not even close!

The energetic delivery of Rickey’s solo is as awesome now as it was back at the beginning of Skynyrd’s career.

Clearly he and the audience are having a blast.  No wonder this song has been stuck in fans’ heads for such a long time!
