The Real Story of How Dolly Parton Said ‘No’ to Elvis

We still don’t know how our girl Dolly could possibly have resisted a proposition by Elvis… but somehow, she was able to stick to her guns.  (And no, it wasn’t that kind of proposition!)

She and the King of Rock and Roll had entered into negotiations about a very special song: “I Will Always Love You,” which has been covered by many artists since Dolly Parton wrote it in 1973.  (We’re sure you remember Whitney Houston’s famous version from “The Bodyguard!”)  But negotiations between Dolly and Elvis got pretty hardcore... he was asking her for just a little more than she was willing to surrender.

In the end, as tough as it was for her, Dolly had to turn down Elvis’s offer.  When asked if she had any regrets about doing so, Dolly had to admit that she would have loved to hear Elvis’s version of her song -- honestly, we would have too!  But we still admire her Dolly for making a tough business decision and being true to herself, as she always is!
