They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Toby Keith must feel that way about his friend and mentor, the late country artist Merle Haggard.
The two had been good friends for years, and it has been reported that Toby has been feeling that loss very keenly since Merle’s passing in April of this year. To honor the memory of his friend, Toby has appeared in public performances honoring Merle Haggard’s work and covering some of his most best-loved songs.
This rendition of Merle’s 1971 ballad, “Carolyn,” is soulful with just a hint of sorrow -- very unlike the rugged, tough-guy image that is Toby’s signature. Instead, this is a softer and more vulnerable performance that highlights an unexpectedly sensitive side of Toby Keith.
This songtrack is featured on “Working Man’s Poet: A Tribute to Merle Haggard” along with other tracks from various artists performing in Merle’s memory. We found it to be a moving tribute from one friend to another.
